About this store
What is Edo Kiriko?
The oldest cut glass in existence in our country is the "Shirurii no Umi" in the Shosoin.
The beginning of Edo Kiriko dates back to the late Edo period. It is believed that the Kanagaya Kusei, a bead shop in Edo during the Taisho era (1830–44), began using gold sand to engrave patterns on the surface of the glass.
In 1834, when Admiral Perry arrived in Urawa, he presented Edo-choko as a gift.
The admiral was surprised to learn that Japan had such technology and expressed great admiration.
Subsequently, with the opening of the country, Western techniques were also introduced,
Thanks to the efforts of the previous generation, including Koichi Kumakura, the name Edo Kiriko was adopted, and in 1993 it was designated as "Traditional Craft Products of Tokyo Prefecture" under the "Tokyo Traditional Craft Products Industry," and in 2012 it was designated as a "Traditional Japanese Craft Product."
About colored glass crafts
Thanks to everyone, Shari Glass Art will celebrate its 30th anniversary on the last day of April 2023.
The lower-class neighborhoods of Tokyo have been the area that has supported the Edo craftsmanship culture of Japan since the Edo period.
It was a prosperous area in Kameido Kaiwaimocho, Ekkodai Ward.
However, with the passage of time, that number is also decreasing.
Edo Kiriko is also a traditional craft that was operated by individual workshops.
Kenji Kumakura, who was born and raised in the local area and has been engaged in this work since his father's time,
As a shop and studio that produces and sells Edo-cut glass in Kameido
We opened as a color glass craft shop in April 1994.
